Education Icons: A Visual Language for Full Sail University
Project Overview
For this eight-week project with Full Sail University's RUNWAY Productions, I designed and developed a comprehensive iconography system from scratch. The final library consists of over 25 unique icons representing key academic terminology across seven diverse courses, from 3D Animation to English Composition. The result is a cohesive and modern visual language created to enhance educational materials for both digital and print platforms.
The Challenge
The primary objective, as outlined in the project brief, was to create icons that were both visually compelling and informative, capable of communicating complex academic ideas at a glance. A key challenge was to maintain a consistent design language across the entire set while ensuring each icon was uniquely tailored to its course theme. All graphics had to be developed first in a bold, black-and-white format, with final deliverables including color and mobile-friendly versions.
My Process & Approach
My process followed a structured design methodology for each topic, ensuring a thoughtful and efficient workflow from concept to completion.
I began with an in-depth Research and Conceptualization phase, which involved detailed brainstorming sessions with an AI creative partner to generate a wide range of initial concepts. While AI served as a powerful sounding board to accelerate ideation, the final concept selection, refinement, and execution were always driven by my own critical thinking and design expertise.
Using the strongest resulting ideas, I gathered related reference imagery to guide the visual direction. This research informed the Sketching phase, where I explored and refined the most promising visual metaphors for each term. This structured approach proved highly effective, as my initial concepts were consistently aligned with the project's goals, allowing for an efficient workflow with no revisions needed from the project lead. Approved sketches were then developed into final vector assets in Adobe Illustrator.
The Outcome
The project concluded with the successful delivery of a complete and organized icon library. The final package included a full set of graphics for each of the seven courses, delivered in native Adobe Illustrator (.ai) files along with black-and-white, color, and mobile-friendly (SVG) versions, ready for immediate use in Full Sail University's educational materials.
